Interior Tensioning Guide for Dome Tents

Proper tensioning of your dome tent’s structure is essential to ensure a secure and durable setup. This guide will walk you through the steps required to apply tension to your tent’s components, including the door frame, panorama window, and the perimeter. Follow these instructions carefully to achieve the best results and prevent damage during the setup process.

Preliminaries of Dome Tent

Gather Materials:

  1. Locate your long straight tension tubes, J-hooks, and the smaller nutsintended for the J-hooks.
  2. Keep the shorter tension tubesaside for later use around your panorama window.

Insert Tension Tubes:

  1. Go around and insert a tension tube inside each horizontal sleevearound the perimeter.

Attach J-hooks:

  1. Slide J-hooksunder the horizontal struts in the base row and up through the holes in the tension tubes.
  2. Finger-tightena nut onto the J-hook whenever possible.
  3. If J-hooks don’t reach, see the next page for additional instructions.

Adjust J-hooks for Heavy Frames:

  1. Occasionally, J-hooks may be too narrow to hook around the struts of the base row (especially with a heavy frame).
  2. Use tension tubesas levers to spread them out slightly, as needed.

Secure Your Door Frame

Use Ratchet Straps:To prevent your door opening from stretching out during tensioning, use a pair of ratchet straps.

Insert Tension Bars:Slide tension bars into the vertical sleeves on either side of your door frame (if present).

Apply Temporary Tension:Apply even tension across the doorway using the ratchet straps. One strap should be secured above and the other below each sleeve.

Remove Straps Later:These straps will be removed and the tension tubes will be repurposed later once most of the horizontal tension bars in the base row are fully tightened.

Ratchet and Tension – Starting from the Door

Position the Ratchet Straps:

  1. Drop down to the horizontal tension tubes on both sides of the door frame.
  2. For each J-hook (if necessary), use 1 ratchet strap per hook. Hook both ends around the upper hubabove your first tension tube.
  3. Loop the strap under the horizontal strut in the base row and slide the loop around the tension tube.

Secure the J-hooks:

  1. Make sure to hook the ends only to the hubs, not the middle of the struts (which can bend under tension).
  2. Use the ratchet to pull the tension tube down towards the base row.
  3. Hook a J-hook under the base row strut, run its straight end through the tension tube, and finger-tighten a nu

Continue All the Way Around

Ratchet and Tension Each Tube:

  1. Continue using the ratchet strap technique, tensioning one tube after another.
  2. Alternate between either side of the door to tighten down the first several tension tubes, and then continue all the way around the dome perimeter.

Tighten the J-hooks:

  1. Some tension bars will require 1 ratchet strap, others will need 2to bring the tension tube into range of the J-hooks.

Finish with Panorama Window Tubes:

  1. The last tension tubes near the panorama window are the 2 vertical tubesthat temporarily held your cover in place around the door frame.
  2. Release these and use them now.

Tighten Nuts:

  1. Once all J-hooks are in place, tighten downthe nuts using a 17mm socket and impact driver.

Tensioning Your Panorama Window

Insert Tension Tubes:

  1. Our dome tent include tension sleevesalong certain sections of the panorama window.
  2. Slide the remaining shorter tension tubesinto these sleeves on the side and top of the panorama window.

Apply Tension with Ratchet Straps:

  1. Use ratchet strapsto pull the tension tubes close enough to the perimeter struts framing the panorama window.
  2. Once in place, screw nuts onto J-hooks as you did before.

Tighten with Impact Driver:

  1. Tighten each J-hook with your impact driver.

Use Zap Straps for a Closer Fit:

  1. For an even closer fit, consider using heavy-duty zap strapsin addition to J-hooks.
  2. The closer the fit, the more the tension on the zipper will be minimized.

Alternative Method:

  1. You can also ratchet the tension tubes until they’re sitting right up against the window struts.
  2. Use thick ratchet strapsto hold the tubes in place, instead of J-hooks, for the closest possible fit.

Allow Time for the Cover to Stretch:

  1. If you’re expecting to open and close the panorama window frequently in summer, tightly tension the window area to relieve pressure on the zipper.
  2. Allow at least a weekfor the cover and window to stretch and settle. In cold weather, this might take longer.

Opening the Panorama Window

Release Tension First:Before opening your panorama window, release the tension at the base row first, while still keeping the tension in place around the window’s upper perimeter.

Do Not Force the Zipper:Never force the zipper to open or close while under tension. Doing so can break the zipper.

Conclusion

Properly tensioning your dome tent is crucial for its stability and longevity. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can ensure that the structure is secure and ready for use. Always take care when handling the tensioning process to avoid damaging the fabric or zippers, and allow time for the material to stretch and settle for the best fit.
